Is your relationship feeling stuck?

Most relationships experience difficult periods. Sometimes you know exactly what the problem is. At other times, you may simply know that things aren’t working as they used to.

You may find that you are:

  • Having the same arguments over and over again
  • Struggling to communicate without becoming frustrated or defensive
  • Feeling unheard, misunderstood or emotionally disconnected
  • Finding it difficult to rebuild trust
  • Spending more time arguing than enjoying your relationship
  • Struggling with changes in family, work, finances or other circumstances
  • Unsure about the future of your relationship
  • Considering separation but unsure what to do next

You don’t have to wait until your relationship reaches breaking point before seeking support.

How can couples therapy help?

Couples therapy provides a structured and confidential environment where both people can talk about their experience of the relationship and explore the difficulties they are facing.

Depending on your circumstances, counselling may help you to:

Improve communication
Understand patterns of communication that may be contributing to conflict and find more constructive ways to talk to each other.

Work through recurring conflict
Explore why the same disagreements keep happening and what may be underlying them.

Reconnect
Address feelings of emotional distance and explore ways to rebuild connection within your relationship.

Work through changes and challenges
Get support when circumstances such as parenting, family issues, work, finances or other major life changes put pressure on your relationship.

Understand what happens next
If you’re uncertain about the future of your relationship, counselling can provide a space to explore your circumstances and options.

What happens in couples therapy?

Coming to counselling for the first time can feel daunting, particularly when you’re already experiencing difficulties in your relationship.

Sessions provide an opportunity for both partners to talk about their concerns in a confidential and supportive environment.

Rather than focusing on who is right or wrong, couples counselling can help you understand the patterns that have developed within your relationship and consider different ways of responding to them.

The focus of counselling will depend on your individual circumstances and what you would like support with.

Do we need to be in serious trouble before seeking couples therapy?

No.

Some couples seek counselling after a significant period of conflict, while others come because they have noticed problems developing and want to address them before they become more difficult.

You may also seek couples therapy when there isn’t one major problem but you feel increasingly disconnected from each other.

There is no particular point at which a couple “should” seek counselling. If something in your relationship isn’t working for you, it can be worth talking to someone about it.

What if we don't agree about the problem?

It’s common for partners to have different perspectives on their relationship.

You may believe the main issue is communication, while your partner may see trust, intimacy, finances, family or something else as the central problem.

You don’t need to agree about the problem before coming to counselling.

Couples therapy provides a space where both perspectives can be explored and understood.

What if only one of us wants counselling?

It’s not unusual for one partner to be more ready to seek help than the other.

If your partner isn’t ready to attend couples counselling, individual counselling can still provide an opportunity to talk through your own circumstances and concerns.

Mark provides both individual and relationship counselling, depending on what you are looking for support with.
